Convertible Top Cable

Removal Procedure

  1. Place all the windows in the full down position.
  2. Place the folding top in a halfway open position.
  3. Remove the screws (1) from the front of the folding top cover retainer (2).

  4. Remove the folding top number 1 bow garnish molding edge screws (1) retainer (2), rail guides, top handle pocket garnish, flipper doors on the side being serviced. Refer to Folding Top Number 1 Bow Garnish Molding Replacement.
  5. Position the folding top cover (1) over the corner (2) of the number 1 bow to expose the side tension cable screw. Refer to Folding Top Cover Replacement.

  6. Remove the side tension cable spring screw (1) that attaches the side tension cable end to the number 1 bow.

  7. Remove the folding top side rear weatherstrip. Refer to Folding Top Side Rear Weatherstrip Replacement.
  8. Remove the folding top cover from the side retainer (3) exposing the hole located at the top of the folding top cover retainer.

  9. Remove the tape holding the side tension cable end (2) into the side rail link hole.
  10. Disconnect the side tension cable end from the side rail link hole. The side tension cable should be loose at both ends and still in the folding top cover pocket.
  11. Attach approximately 3 feet of 16-gauge wire to the top of the side tension cable spring hole (1) this will assist in the reinstalling the side tension cable in the folding top cover pocket.

  12. Remove the side tension cable and spring from the bottom of the folding top cover pocket with the wire attached.
  13. Disconnect and leave the wire in the folding top cover pocket for reinstalling.

Installation Procedure

    Note: Attach the new side tension cable and spring to the end of the wire that was used in the removal. Pull the wire forward until the cable and spring is in the proper position to the number 1 bow. Remove the wire from the end of the side tension cable and spring. Refer to the opposite side for proper routing, if necessary.
  1. Starting at the bottom of the folding top cover pocket, attach the side tension cable and spring end to the 3 feet of 16−guage wire that was left in the removal, pull the side tension cable and spring (4) upward in the pocket until it reaches the number 1 bow, Do Not install the screw to the side tension cable end at this time.

  2. Install the side tension cable end through the upper corner of the folding top side rear weatherstrip hole. Refer to Folding Top Side Rear Weatherstrip Replacement.
  3. Connect the side tension cable end into the side rail link (3) hole, place a small piece of masking tape or equivalent to secure the side tension cable end (2) in place.
  4. Install the folding top cover into the retainer.
  5. Finish installing the folding top side rear weatherstrip.
  6. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution.
  7. Install the side tension cable spring end screw (1) that attaches the side tension cable end to the number 1 bow and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb in).

  8. Install the folding top cover (1) over the corner (2) of the folding top number 1 bow. Refer to Folding Top Cover Replacement.

  9. Install the folding top number 1 bow garnish molding edge screws (1) retainer (2), rail guides, top handle pocket garnish, flipper doors on the side being serviced. Refer to Folding Top Number 1 Bow Garnish Molding Replacement.
  10. Install the screws (1) to the front of the folding top cover retainer (2) and tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb in).

  11. Place the folding top in the lock position, check for appearance and fit.
  12. Place all the windows in the full up position.
  13. Inspect the front edge of the folding top to windshield frame for a good seal.
  14. Water test the vehicle to ensure a proper water tight seal.
